Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about SmartSailor — the platform, the SmartBox, the AI Assistant, and what "agentic" means for your boat.

SmartBox / Hardware / Integration

Is SmartSailor compatible with my existing NMEA 2000 network?+

Yes. The SmartBox supports NMEA 2000, NMEA 0183 and SeaTalk natively. It plugs into your existing instrument bus and reads data from your chartplotter, autopilot, depth sensor and other connected instruments without rewiring.

Does SmartSailor work without WiFi at the dock?+

Yes. The SmartBox has built-in 4G/LTE cellular connectivity, so it transmits data even when you're not in WiFi range. It is also satellite-ready for offshore use.

How is the SmartBox powered? Will it drain my boat's batteries?+

The SmartBox has its own autonomous power: internal battery + solar panel input. It can operate independently of the boat's main batteries, and will not flatten them when you leave the boat at the dock.

Which sensors are built into the SmartBox?+

Out of the box: temperature and humidity, atmospheric pressure, air quality (IAQ, CO₂, VOC) with harmful gas detection, tilt and vibration (IMU), and built-in GPS.

Can I add external sensors, cameras or automation?+

Yes. The SmartBox includes 4 onboard relays, configurable for whatever you want to drive — lights, water pump, anchor windlass, automation routines. For sensing, you can extend with a wide range of home-automation devices — smoke detectors, hatch and porthole opening sensors, impact sensors, and others — over multiple protocols: NMEA 2000, NMEA 0183, SeaTalk, Bluetooth LE and Zigbee. Security cameras integrate via IP.

Is the SmartBox plug-and-play or do I need a technician?+

It is designed as plug-and-play hardware. Standard installation is straightforward for a boat owner with basic NMEA connectivity. For more complex integrations (relay control, security cameras, custom wiring), a marine electrician installs it in under an hour.

Does the SmartBox receive software updates?+

Yes. It supports OTA (over-the-air) updates: new features and improvements roll out automatically to all installed devices.

Dashboard / App

Can I access the SmartSailor Dashboard from my phone?+

Yes. The dashboard is responsive and works on desktop, tablet and smartphone. Push notifications are delivered to your mobile device, and remote access is secured.

Can I customize what I see on the Dashboard?+

Yes. The dashboard is built around modular widgets — battery, weather, NMEA navigation, cameras, AI Assistant, deadlines, automation logs, air quality, and others — and you can arrange them with drag-and-drop into the layout that fits how you actually use your boat.

What can the Dashboard monitor?+

Energy and batteries, position and navigation (live and historical), weather, security and cameras, environmental conditions (air quality, tilt), maintenance and deadlines, and conversations with the AI Assistant.

AI Assistant

What can the AI Assistant actually do?+

Two things at once. It answers your questions about your specific boat — engine intervals, electrical specs, troubleshooting — drawing from the manuals you've uploaded or those already available in the SmartSailor library. And when the boat is connected, it surfaces issues on its own: it explains alerts, suggests interventions, and points out things you wouldn't have thought to ask.

Does the AI Assistant make decisions for me?+

No. The AI Assistant explains, suggests and warns. The decisions stay with you. It is built to remove the worry of missing something, not to take ownership of your boat.

How does the AI Assistant know my specific boat?+

You either choose the manuals already in the SmartSailor library (engines, common onboard systems, popular equipment) or upload the PDFs specific to your boat. The Assistant indexes them, learns the characteristics of your boat, and combines that knowledge with live telemetry from the SmartBox to give context-aware answers.

Are the AI Assistant's answers sourced?+

Yes. Every answer cites the specific manual section or data source it relied on, so you can verify what it tells you.

About SmartSailor

What does "agentic" mean for my boat?+

It means SmartSailor works for you in the background, 24/7 — watching batteries, sensors and systems while you're away, flagging only what matters, anticipating problems before they ruin a weekend. It is built to take over the worry, not the pleasure of owning a boat.

Can SmartSailor predict failures before they happen?+

For some systems, yes. Predictive maintenance is an active capability of the platform: it analyzes patterns over time and anticipates issues that point-in-time monitoring would miss. The classic example is the battery — correct voltage and current at a given moment do not guarantee good battery health; SmartSailor reads the charge and discharge patterns over time to flag a battery before it actually fails. The underlying method is proprietary and is part of the technology covered by our patent-pending application.

Is SmartSailor patented?+

The SmartSailor platform as a whole is patent-pending — the core technology of the system is covered by our patent application.

How much does SmartSailor cost?+

There is a free tier: sign up, manage your boat right away with deadlines, documents, equipment catalog and manuals — no credit card. The SmartBox hardware and Premium features (24/7 monitoring, advanced AI, predictive analytics) are commercial offerings. Contact us for SmartBox availability, installation and pricing.

Is SmartSailor for me if I have only one boat, or only if I run a fleet?+

Both. SmartSailor adapts to the audience — private owner (single boat, peace of mind), charter operator (multi-vessel uptime), marina or shipyard (proactive service to customers). The platform is the same; what changes is the way you use it.

What languages is SmartSailor available in?+

Italian, English, French and Spanish.
